Local economic developers are expected to play many roles: community leaders, project managers, chief marketing officers, problem solvers, and more. Access to data has always been an important aspect of running a best-in-class EDC. But many of us have become reliant on automated data services or SaaS licenses to produce the numbers we need to tell compelling stories about our communities. What happens when the world stops and those fee-based, privately operated data firms go offline? Are you prepared to play another role on behalf of your community, chief economist?

There are several free tools and information sources powered by publicly available data that every economic developer should know how to use. Brian Kelsey, who writes about the economy, labor market, and economic development at CivicAnalytics.com, will provide quick tutorials on his favorite data sources using examples from Texas communities. Novice researchers and armchair economists will get an overview of each resource and an explanation of strengths and weaknesses of the data during the first portion of the webinar. The second portion of the webinar will be more of an "office hours" format, where experienced researchers will have an opportunity to ask more detailed questions or discuss solutions to common research issues.
