FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
MISSION - [July17, 2024] – South Texas College opened its Office for Academic Affairs and Economic Development inside Mission EDC’s 55,000 square-foot incubator on Wednesday, becoming the sixth institution of higher learning with a presence at the CEED.
Known by its acronym, the Center for Education and Economic Development (CEED) continues to position itself as a hub for entrepreneurs and students alike. It boasts a comprehensive web of educational partners and small business resources to foster economic development, innovation and job growth.
“STC and Mission EDC are committed to bridging the gap between academia and industry to address current needs, create a robust pool of talent and spur entrepreneurship,” Mission EDC CEO Teclo J. Garcia said. “We’re proud to welcome STC to the CEED and to the City of Mission.”
STC will offer courses at the CEED focused on personal skills and business development and connect students with businesses through its wide-ranging list of registered apprenticeship programs. These efforts aim to create opportunities for upskilling that will lead to higher wages and enhance economic mobility.
“Solid partnerships are key, and the city of Mission is a vital partner in education. This ribbon cutting is a symbol of the collaboration that is expanding opportunities into Mission for our community and workforce,” STC President Dr. Ricardo J. Solis said. “As we enter a new era at the Mission CEED building, we look forward to continue providing training that will upskill, reskill and train residents for in-demand jobs that will be a steppingstone for life-changing success.”
The CEED currently houses 22 tenants. Five of them are institutions of higher learning: the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s Small Business Development Center, Texas Woman’s University, Wayland Baptist University and Cal Regional. Other educational tenants include Teach For America, IDEA Public Schools, College 1st and RGV Focus.
