WESLACO, TXFebruary 6, 2026 – The Weslaco Economic Development Corporation (EDC) announces the end-of-term departure of board member Fred Perez, concluding six years of service to the organization and the community.

Mr. Perez was appointed to the Weslaco EDC Board in early 2019, during a transitional period for the corporation. He brought expertise in transportation and logistics as the owner of a fleet of more than 100 semi-trucks, along with experience in real estate development and aviation-related industries.

Over the course of his six-year tenure, Mr. Perez supported the Weslaco EDC in the recruitment and approval of 194 economic development projects, resulting in the creation of 2,619 jobs and generating more than $301 million in capital investment for the City of Weslaco. His contributions helped fuel business growth across multiple sectors and delivered lasting economic benefits to the community.

He also helped guide the Weslaco EDC through operational challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, including the transition to virtual board meetings and remote staff operations.

As a board member, Mr. Perez was actively involved in shaping major initiatives that expanded Weslaco’s development capacity. His leadership supported the continued development and expansion of Class A industrial park infrastructure with 147 acres, helping position Weslaco as a competitive location for manufacturing, logistics, and large-scale industrial investment. These efforts have laid the groundwork for future job creation and private-sector growth.

In 2022, Mr. Perez’s work on the board contributed to the successful recruitment of Glazer’s Beer and Beverage, one of the largest single industrial distribution centers in the region, representing an investment of more than $30 million and the creation of 200 high-paying jobs.

Mr. Perez also played an instrumental role in supporting major retail and commercial recruitment efforts, including the successful Sam’s Club project, $46.5 million capital investment with over 200 new career opportunities, a milestone investment that strengthened Weslaco’s retail base, generated employment opportunities, and reinforced the city’s role as a regional shopping destination.

“Fred’s influence went beyond projects and numbers,” said Steven Valdez, Executive Director of the Weslaco EDC, “He was soft-spoken, but prepared, and always respectful in his approach. His professionalism and humility earned the respect of everyone who served alongside him, and we are grateful for his years of service.”

During his tenure, Mr. Perez served in leadership roles as Vice President and Secretary. His background in logistics, development, and aviation provided valuable insight that supported industrial recruitment and major commercial projects strengthening Weslaco’s competitiveness and quality of life.

“Fred has been a steady and thoughtful leader on the EDC board,” said Sandra Charlton, Weslaco EDC Board President. “His contributions have helped move important projects forward, creating jobs and investment that leave a lasting positive impact on our community.”

As Mr. Perez concludes his service on the Board of Directors for the Economic Development Corporation of Weslaco, the City of Weslaco and Weslaco EDC extend their sincere appreciation for his years of dedication and service. His legacy of growth, leadership, and community commitment provides a strong foundation for the continued success of Weslaco’s economic development efforts.
